Finding The Perfect Balance

Have you ever heard the phrase “work life balance”? There are a lot of people who have heard it and are left wondering what it means. What does it mean to you? For a lot of people “work life balance” means being able get up and go to work, take care of the kids, make dinner, pay bills, and have a happy relationship with your significant other. There are other items that might be thrown in there by different people. Can you do this all the time? Probably for a little while then you’re probably going to find yourself getting rundown and burned out. You haven’t achieved a perfect balance between work and play. Now you’re left wondering if there is such a thing.

Living to work or working to live, what are you doing? This is the key to achieving the perfect work life balance. Working to live means that you’re forced to get up and head out to work each day just to make ends meet. Now don’t get me wrong, we all need a way to make a living. But, is it necessary for you to head off to the office and do the same thing each day? If it is, then it may be time to re-evaluate your life. Maybe you can work at home on certain days, this way you won’t have to head out and deal with the stress. If this is not possible maybe a career change is in order.

A lot of people regardless of age are changing careers these days. They do this for many reasons, some because they are a displaced worker others do it because they want to achieve the perfect balance between work and life. Work can be stressful and if you start bringing that stress home it can cause issues with your family. Having a home office might help alleviate some of this stress and in turn help at home and with everyone happiness.

There are some steps that you can take to help you start living to work. Simple steps like these:

  1. Set up a calendar. Knowing how you’re spending your time will help you understand what areas of your life need more attention. Try to split things up equally among your work, house, children and spouse or partner.
  2. Evaluate what is going on in your life. Try to point out what is important and make a list from most important to least important. This will let you know how to set your calendar. Spend the most time with what is most important in your life.
  3. Exchange things that you’re spending time with that are less important with those that are most important. Keep you calendar on your computer this way you have easy access and it can be changed on the moment. Also color coding helps with knowing what activities are coming up.

Just a few changes in your life to help cut back on work related stress will help you start living to work. No one wants to work in order to live, so make those changes that need to be made today. Start enjoying life!
